Commitment to Diversity
Within the main focus of Na Pueo's mission, my goal as an Editor-in-Chief is to make sure that within all the stories that are included in our paper, there is the same purpose that we as a staff stand by, which is to be the voice and advocate for students and what they have to say. Moreover, this mission would not be possible to accomplish if it weren't for the diversity I firmly stand by and enforce in the newsroom. This would include keeping in mind this purpose when looking at each and every issue we publish along with the inclusion of everyone, being proud to hold onto representation as a team. I believe I am a leader who exemplifies this profile of inclusion because it aligns with my passion for journalism and belief in what this team of staff members is capable of, which I envision to be excellent truth-seekers and empowering advocates in different perspectives of topics.
Actions Toward Diversity/Inclusion
As an Editor-in-Chief who is committed to immersing diversity and inclusion in my newsroom, examples of how I include these qualities toward how I run my team include: pairing new people with people of more experience in journalism, encouraging my team to have a mix of genders and grade levels amongst their interviewees, and requiring my team to write for a different section of the newspaper per an issue.

First, I think it's vital to pair new people with people of more experience in journalism because the knowledge from people in higher levels of journalism will be passed on to those who will soon be equally as skillful in this field. It's teaching from experience in order to gain a stronger newsroom and thus, an impactful newspaper to share with others.

Secondly, encouraging my team to have a mix of genders and grade levels amongst their interviewees is crucial in the journalism process of writing a story because I want to teach my team the importance of gaining multiple perspectives and angles for stories. After all, it's what makes a story great, those that seek from all possible viewpoints since not everyone in this world has the same opinion from one another.

Lastly, requiring my team to write for a different section of the newspaper per an issue is my effort in teaching them the significance of expanding their abilities as a journalist in order to find the section they feel they are most passionate about. However, this comes with trying all possible approaches to journalism first before coming to that conclusion. Skilled or still learning a section of the newspaper are both encouraged within our team, and finding your identity as a journalist is one of the most important lessons I try to teach of all within this requirement of diversity I have for them.
